“It is my intention for these scenes, now suspended in time, to inspire awe and to encourage reflection on the eternal.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Rebecca Lemmon graduated from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, with a BFA in Fine Arts and BA in Art Education for K-12. There, she pursued her love for painting, the creative process, and confirmed her desire to work in Art Education. She also spent time studying abroad in Italy and Ireland.
In the Fall of 2022, she transitioned from full-time teaching to motherhood. Becca continues to paint and sell art from her home studio. Her works have been exhibited at the Lightner Museum, Cummer Museum of Art, Crisp-Ellert Art Museum, Jewish Community Alliance of Jacksonville, and Flagler College.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“I feel that ordinary days have their own glory, and the regular of life has its own beauty to behold. As light streaming between leaves creates contrast and casts shapes that move and change, full of rich deep colors. So contented time with loved ones quietly passes by. The faithful simplicity of daily life inspires me. I am intrigued by compositions that happen when the little bits of golden light paint the leaves in the morning and evening. I enjoy translating that into my work. I’ve been meditating on Psalm 19, and the refreshment that comes from having peace with YAHWEH, and the Word that brings me joy. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to my Redeemer. Ultimately, I desire that my life and work will honor and glorify God, who created all.”
ABOUT THE WORK
Rebecca Lemmon presents fleeting encounters with the world of nature, revealing the power of light to transform everyday experiences. Lemmon’s work calls attention to the beauty that surrounds us daily. Details that might pass us by in the blink of an eye—a beam of light filtered through the leaves of a tree, the shimmer of sunshine on ripe fruit, or deep shadows amidst lush foliage—are captured for the viewer’s pleasure and contemplation.
These immersive tableaus, featuring all-over compositions with a compressed focal plane, highlight Lemmon’s animated brushwork and richly textured paint surfaces. As the viewer’s gaze becomes entangled in dense greenery, a dynamic effect occurs between the perception of surface and depth as leaves and fruit seem to project from the surface of the canvas, spilling into the gallery space. In distilling these transient moments, Lemmon strives to create transcendental experiences, delivering us from the mundane into the sublime.
